June is the transition month: I resolve to…
June is a time of promise, of planting gardens, of getting the barbecue cleaned and ready, of making summer plans and personal resolutions. Change things up a bit. Lighten up. Add some new spices to our summer menus, make Rose our “house wine”, switch from dark whisky to clear spirits, try a new toothpaste. Transition.
The aroma of meat grilling on the barbecue is like Chanel No.5 to carnivores. Whether you’re into fiery, smoky foods, or love a caramelized, crispy bite, this summery five-pack contains the most grill-worthy blends, each with its own unique flavour profile. But wait, how about the condo dwellers, backyard-less and barbecue-less folks? These rubs do stellar duty under the oven broiler just as well.
Caramelized Coffee Rub Kanel teamed up with coffee roasters Moccasin Joe of the Kanehsatake Mohawk territory to create this smouldering, sweet and savoury rub, mingling ancho chile, Aleppo peppers, freshly ground coffee and brown sugar. Fresh Salted Peppercorns, hand-harvested in Cambodia, are young green peppercorns, brined in salt water before drying. The result: bright, floral, savoury peppercorns that burst open with flavour in every bite. Sweet Korean Heat Hot, sweet and salty, is a grill-able blend, bursting with fruity and fiery gochugaru, the smoky red chili pepper at the heart of Korean cuisine. Butcher’s Block Pure of porcini mushroom mingling with black peppercorns, zesty garlic and chunky sea salt, is a flavour-packed butcher’s blend with a lick of heat. Organic Louisiana Fried Chicken is inspired by southern-style fried chicken, and is a lightly spiced blend balancing fragrant herbs and garlic with peppery heat. Who could ask for anything more?
As a food writer, my teeth are my most important piece of professional equipment. So, it was with great interest that I read about a big innovation in toothpaste: Crest Densify. The promise is that it actively rebuilds tooth density for stronger teeth, and strengthens weakened enamel. So when my tube of toothpaste had just a squeeze or two remaining, I ambled down to the corner Shoppers and headed to the toothpaste aisle. We are stressed, we grind our teeth at night, we stain our teeth with coffee, tea and wine. We use and abuse our teeth. We will, if necessary, open a bottle of nail polish with our teeth. (I recently observed an enthusiastic server in a restaurant open a bottle with her teeth!) We all need the benefits of Crest Densify.

While every day can be a Rose day, June 11th is National Rose Day. Bottega Rose is new to me, but we’ve become good friends, and it may become my “House Rose,” particularly Bottega Rose Gold. If tapas and charcuterie are on the menu, I like Bottega Vino del Poeli Rose with its delicate balance of fruit and floral notes. And when the Pizza is delivered, pop open a bottle of Vino del Poeli Prosecco Rose DC and lift those slices up a notch. And if your budget is just under ten bucks, Bottega 0 Rose can come home with you.
The flavour profile of the Limited Edition is rich and fruity with subtle sweet vanilla and floral tones on the finish, all balanced by the four classic London Dry botanicals. Besides its truly sumptuous taste, the gorgeous look and a fresh spring lilac colour make it the perfect wedding and celebration cocktail.
