St. Regis Installs Sculptures for Olympic Period and Beyond
Set to Feature Pieces by Renowned Artist Seward Johnson
The St. Regis Hotel is featuring two works from renowned sculptor Seward Johnson during and beyond the Olympic period.
The St. Regis Hotel Vancouver is already graced with a superb collection of original art which includes over 20 pieces placed throughout the public spaces of the building. This year, to coincide with the Olympics, the St. Regis Hotel is housing two pieces of art from internationally renowned sculptor Seward Johnson.
The two sculptures that are installed, “Anticipation” and “Aprés-Ski,” capture skiers both before and after their trip up the hill and are completely appropriate to the athletic spirit of the 2010 Winter Games. Cast from bronze, the life-sizes sculptures, valued at nearly $100,000 are painted to produce a magnetic, life-like result. Seward Johnson’s pieces have been publically installed at Embassies, major sports events and celebrations in places such as Paris, Bonn, Osaka, Lake Geneva and London and they attract attention wherever they are placed.
Seward Johnson’s most famous work is probably Double Check which was originally installed outside the World Trade Centre and came through 9/11 with only minor damage. It was a beacon for emergency workers who decorated it with flowers and mementos. It has since been moved to Liberty Park where it remains a beacon for visitors.
Anticipation, one of the pieces to be placed at the St. Regis Hotel, captures a skier looking uphill toward the mountain and the adventures to come while the other, Aprés-Ski, portrays a skier seated on a bench and wearing a cast on a recent injury. Both marry superb technique and lifelike structure with a sense of fun and whimsy. Seward Johnson’s works generally attract interaction, especially so for Apré-Ski, where people can sit on the bench which is part of the sculpture to have their picture taken. We encourage you to stop in and create Olympic memories by having your picture taken at the St. Regis Hotel with the sculptures. The two pieces are being loaned by The Sculpture Foundation, a not-for-profit dedicated to sharing their art collection with communities worldwide.
“We’re very excited to be able to display these two pieces during the Games period,” said Jeremy Roncoroni, General Manager of the St. Regis Hotel. “They are perfectly in tune with the Olympics and the art program at the St. Regis Hotel. We’re excited to have hotel guests and the public at large come and enjoy these works while they are place until this summer.”
